>>541394053Certain white oaks are theoretical with each other. One very interesting mix comes to mind that no one has thought to do yet that I will not be revealing until I have done it lol. Catalpa and Bignonia sp. vines are likely not compatible but with some technological methods it could be worth a try (and would be fascinating btw). Callicarpa Americana with a arborescent relative could push beauty berry over the line to a persistent deciduous tree form. Goat's Rue with a more woody relative could potentially result in a relatively heavy flowering persistent/deciduous pea shrub type of thing. Major longshot, but Sweet Gum could theoretically MAYBE work with witchhazel. Again it would be fascinating but unlikely. ...anyways I've gone down all these avenues, the best bet is just looking for weird/interesting sports of flowering trees in the woods. Less interesting but far more valuable.

>>541399422I think the more interrsting route is not just mixing two things per se. youre looking for "threshold" plants. What I mean are interesting plants that need a small nudge toward lignification/tree form etc. So that they go from a perennial to a persistent deciduous shrub or tree. Youre not trying to make something new youre trying to nudge something past a threshold.
