>>541403766It works that way, it uses the application's audio stack. If you have Firefox you can disable WebAudio which doesn't hurt most applications even. It was made so you can created web-based vocoders and neat stuff like that, so they say. But it was probably really invented just to fingerprint your computer.

The remote site doesn't have to request permission to use the microphone for it to work. It does a lot of little audio tests and runs filters in order to generate a unique fingerprint of your computer. It's the same basic concept behind canvas and GPU and cpu fingerprinting that web sites do. If you do a number of these tests together you can identify any unique computer and thus, user, with near certainty.It assuredly works on your computer if you run any Chrome, a Chrome-based browser, Firefox, a Firefox-based broweser, Safari, a Webkit-based browser made in the last decade or more. Your computer doesn't need a sound card at all for this to work, the application still has its audio stack and this method of fingerprinting never leaves that stack, inside the browser.
