He tells of how he meets Maxim Maximych, who in turn relays a memory to the narrator. The voice apparently shifts again later on to the diaries of a guy Maximych talks about and whom the anonymous narrator also meets briefly. There isn't much that motivates me to keep reading the book but that's apparently how literary fiction is, you don't read it for suspense etc but because it makes you think. Hasn't made me think yet but I guess that comes later.
