The Ben Shapiro style debates...the edgy, high IQ right wing figures like Milo Yiannopolous or Richard Spencer, even Charlie Kirk...these were figures borne out of the end of the Obama administration and the early Trump era. Historically they are somewhat of an anomaly. In the 90s and 2000s, no one considered right wingers to be those who questioned enforced consensus. In the 2000s, it was those on the right who championed George W. Bush and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
