It's called autorotation. And yes, you can glide it. You can actually put energy into the rotors with dead engines while in flight. Then you manage that energy into an emergency landing. I don't fly two blade rotary. Fuck that. Mast bumping is a dumb way to die. I fly mostly fixed wing, but I'm rated for MD-500 and Bell 407. I prefer Bell 407. MD-500 has spooked me in the past with control issues.. I've never even had a hot start on 407's..

Helicopters are typically designed so that the blades will continue to turn in the event of a power loss and act kind of like a parachute. It would be a hard landing, but a ways from free fall. Supposing the main rotor is intact, of course.

My grandfather flew Lancaster bombers in WW2, and he did private flights after. During heli training they had to do a crash landing, and yea they do have some glide-ratio, but they aren't exactly the best for a soft landing. Too many random things can go awry, and they drop like stones if there is a catastrophic failure... They really should have some sort of auto-ejecting parachutes like the spacecapsules have to assist their landings in case of emergencies...

Alas like Kobe & SRV, their pilots fucked up and slammed them into stuff - can't stop that.

The Piper PA-24-260 crashed at 1.15pm just moments after taking off from the airport in the small coastal town of Seldovia, about 136 miles southwest of Anchorage, according to Clint Johnson, the National Transportation Safety Board's Alaska region chief.

It was then left submerged in about 15 feet of water in the Seldovia Slough near the shore as first responders struggled to reach the aircraft in the frigid water, which can reach temperatures as low as 38 degrees Fahrenheit, he said.

Finally at around 6.30pm, after the tide level dropped, Alaska State Troopers said they were able to extract four bodies from inside the plane.

The victims' identities have not yet been released.
>>

>Helicopters typically have a glide ratio of about 4:1, meaning they can travel 4,000 feet forward for every 1,000 feet of altitude lost during autorotation.
In contrast, fixed-wing airplanes generally have much higher glide ratios, often exceeding 10:1, allowing them to cover greater distances while descending.

It can be done, but you gotta think fast
