It's just not natural for men to be away from their families for multiple seasons. Most ancient wars were not fought year round because men were need at home to plant and harvest crops and winter was too dangerous to travel in. I think Penalope in the Odyssey being faithful was basically a long-to-establish joke that she knew he'd come back and kick everyone's ass and kill her if she wasn't faithful to him lol.
