The government was basically embarrassed and shamed into giving rent support to soldiers because housing got so fucked soldiers couldn't even afford to live anywhere near their own base.

And if the ADF can't enfranchise its own personele, personele start making union style representations, and the ADF then fails to pay veteran's you end up with a defence force which isn't worth joining, to protect a county which isn't worth protecting, full of people who all demand protection. The cultural view of the ADF is totally regressive in claiming anyone who doesn't want to join isn't worth recruiting, anyone who has a collective interest is undermining the collective interest, and anyone demanding protection can't protect themselves. Outside the ADF such views are laughable and service personele are indeed laughed at everywhere they go.
