The best move for the nation would be to raise taxes and cut government spending across the board. Iran is half way across the globe even in victory what would we win? The strait? Now we must have a permanent fleet presence there and piss everyone off while making ourselves look like hypocrites if we toll it to make money. The oil? We'd have to do a land invasion and have a constant military presence there to get it. We'd also have to rebuild the refineries. Which would be extremely expensive. Regime change? These people aren't moderates that are victims of their government. They agree with what their government is going. We should have learned that when we idealistically went into Afghanistan expecting a Japan style rebuilding of the nation. This war is a quagmire that is a product of Trump getting too confident after successfully ousting Maduro. Nationalism isn't blinding, cults of personality are.
nationalism keeps failing because nationalists will never coordinate to help each other's national interests. if the germans and poles had worked with each other maybe they could have defeated the soviets, but they were too busy trying to erase each other's nationality. they lacked pragmatism and long term thinking, and kept going for the immediate gain (germany... but GROẞER...) without thinking of the obvious needs to make compromises with the local occupied czechs and danes and french for the sake of creating a proper long term european order or super state.i honestly think nationalism will keep failing for the same reasons even if it ever "wins", they will just invent new ways to backstab each other, and regionalisms will devolve into new nationalisms, and everything will crumble again into civil wars because there's always going to be new people born who don't want to be ordered what they are allowed to do.if you dig into it enough, all this right vs left talk is just a fruit of generational conflict, which has been part of human nature for thousands of years.
