why did individualism and capitalism become closely associated with mainstream conservatism? are they not totally incompatible with (and antithetical to) conservatism, considering they facilitate change and demand competition?

i'm not sure how you came to that conclusion. how do you explain the rise in women in the workforce and the de facto 2 income household if not for individualism providing the incentive and wage competition turning that incentive to a mandate?
