We also generally don't have access to the primary resources on our soil that would at least turn us into banana republics. We may have cultural products but their part in the trade mix is ridiculous.Whenever you buy chinese, you give a share of the domestic productivity pool, but they wont import themselves, and so you are impoverishing your base. Then eventually the chinese market figures they don't need you at all and you sacrificed your own industrial base, no powerful enough currency to build back agan from primary services, you're left with nothing. Global trade works well in a world where you can punish aggressive competitors or find a way to specialize each country to create interdependence without penalizing the others.
