Nobody should be grateful for being conquered and having something imposed on them. This is something people on the right-wing will have to understand because otherwise this logic will be easily reversed against them. Colonialism did not happen for the benefit of the people being conquered, it’s shamelessly dishonest to say Europeans went out of their way and conquered to just improve the lives of people around the world. It happened in order to extract resources from the conquered lands and exploit colonial subjects. The fact that some technology and innovation trickled down to colonies to make it easier to extract those resources does not make it a benevolent act or an altogether beneficial endeavor.Moreover, the technology and "civilization" introduced did not always benefit the locals. In fact, the introduced system often broke down the established traditional systems of those societies, which led to more damage and chaos instead of stabilization and improvement. You cannot just artificially force a new system onto people that have not yet learned to adept to it and expect them to thrive or be grateful for it.And to those that disagree - this logic can easily be spun against you. Your own societies have changed greatly recently through the introduction of novel societal models foreign to you, which many of you detest to this day. If you agree that forcing industrialization on colonial subjects was good, then do not complain about feminism, racial tolerance and inclusivity being forced upon you now. Just like you once forcefully civilized "primitive" people, you are also being civilized now. Forcefully. So, it would be wiser to just admit that colonialism was wrong instead of playing this whole mind gymnastics game, which you stand to lose anyway.
