New reports suggest that Bobby Sands, the Irish Republican, was in the process of converting to Islam during his hunger strike in HMS Maze.

Sands famously wasn't particularly devout. He quite famously got into heated debates with visiting Priests over the morality of his potential death on hunger strike.
>>541679810
We know what the reasons were, actually. The Hunger Strike was in protest of the revocation of "Special Category Status" which treated imprisoned or interned members of the IRA as criminals rather than war prisoners.

The demands of the strikers were:
>right to not wear prison uniform
>right to not do prison work
>right to organise educational+recreational pursuits with other prisoners
>right to visits, letters, parcels weekly
They actually advocated this on behalf of both themselves and other prisoners who were members of the UVF/UDA etc.

All 5 demands were granted following the strike. The entire ordeal was very famously a humiliating and very damaging ordeal for the British Government and an enormous boon to the Republican movement. Thatcher does not get enough flak for how badly she botched her stewardship of the Troubles during her time as PM.
>>541679834
In Belfast, certainly. Some suggest it was a metaphor for "muh socialist 32 county republic" but very famously Belfast has become a much more Irish city since the end of the Troubles with the Unionist vote collapsing.
>>
>>541680167
Why are you leaving out that he smeared poo all over himself and the HMP walls. This newspaper is fuckin pathetic its also majority in fucking english.
>>
>>541680224
That's called a blanket protest. They began in 1978 after a prisoner was badly beaten by a member of staff; many Republican prisoners smashed up their cells in protest and were then left with nothing but mattresses and shitty blankets. So they decided to cause as much headache and work for the staff as possible as part of their broader protests.

The idea being
>refuse to wear uniforms (instead only wear blankets)
>create as much work and annoyance for the guards by requiring the cells to be constantly emptied and cleaned
>refuse to leave the cell for any other reason, once more frustrating guards

Fucking with the guards is something the IRA were very good at, which is partly why the "most escape proof prison in Europe" was host to one of the largest jailbreaks in the history of Britain or Ireland, all done by the IRA.
>>
>>541680472
I would add to this that the 40+ years of attempts to do some sort of
>haha dumb hunger strikers
meme have utterly failed. These men (and many others) are still revered by many as local heroes. I think lots of western countries are upset that they often have to go back nearly a century in order to find true "local heroes" that a community can actually look up to and rally around.

There are murals, statues, all sorts of memorials to "the Blanketmen." I think the fact that so many Irish people in the north can rally around Republican leaders makes those who are bereft of relevant political inspirations seethe.

>>541680688
There were some funny religious events during the Troubles, other than Paisley going gigachad and calling the Pope an antichrist to his face.

The first Chief of Staff of the Provisional IRA (A devout Catholic born to Protestant parents in London) famously fell out with many in the IRA over his saying of the Rosary at Republican funerals. He included a scathing dismissal of what he called "directionless eurocommunists" and said they were a bunch of LARPing faggots for getting so uppity about someone in the movement being religious.

Irish Republicanism is a very long tradition anon. Long dead Republicans from the 1790s are still commemorated today.

The wave of putting up statues to them only started a couple years ago; Belfast City Hall's statue of Queen Victoria is now flanked by two Irish Republican revolutionaries.

Sadly the best and brightest in Ulster Loyalism are known by name but bear little relevance on their politics, as the more jingoistic and short-sighted factions of Loyalism became dominant in later years. Everyone knows who Gusty Spence is, but nobody gave a fuck what he stood for, etc.

The IRA was penetrated to the highest levels by British intelligence, the UDA and associates had a weird number of tranny bangers and drug dealers but that's your brain on Protestantism.

ULTIMATELY both sides fucked up making use of criminals to terrorise ordinary people. Nothing was really achieved by two groups, ostensibly Irish, knocking seven bells out of one another.

Gerry Adams is a complete liar and Ian Paisley was a cunt, whom even the Queen hated. It's all just porn for Mexican Americans who think they are Irish. The only time anything moved forward is when the violence stopped. The whole conflict is a repudiation of tit for tat sectarian bullshit. Nobody stopped to think maybe God didn't want them knocking seven bells out of one another for hundreds more years.

Every single belligerent did this, anon. British Army included.
>Nothing was really achieved by two groups
The IRA were the last to join the fighting, and their campaign was even easier to justify than the original one back in 1919. Loyalists had been killing people since the 1960s, the Civil Rights movement was being violently suppressed, the British Army seemed keen to cosy up with the RUC. The fighting didn't just start over nothing.
>The whole conflict is a repudiation of tit for tat sectarian bullshit.
No, that simply happened alongside it. Britain also played a role in making things far worse.
>Nobody stopped to think maybe God didn't want them knocking seven bells out of one another
The Troubles had nothing to do with religion, anon. No belligerent was fighting for God, kekked.

The general consensus of the Catholic population on the eve of the army coming in was "see I told you her Majesty would protect us, things will calm down now." It was obviously downhill from there and trust completely disintegrated. A lot of guys were unhappy to be there but they were less of a problem than the ones very keen to be there...

You didn't address that the IRAs movements were pretty much captured or that both sides made use of fairly obviously sociopathic criminals to conduct terror murders on very loosely affiliated civilian populations of one another's communities.

Too partisan to see that the endless escalation is harming the as yet unborn. Best of luck

Anon I promise you I'm not some daft shinner who's blindly devoted to the Provos, I just know the history of the conflict very well.

The general consensus categorically was not
>see I told you her Majesty would protect us, things will calm down now
These people were not Royalists, at best the Royal family were akin to celebrities. The cautious welcome of the British Army was on account of the misplaced belief that they had come to deal with the Loyalists and the RUC who had been abusing them for so long. There were also many who resisted their arrival, and the "welcome" did not last very long.
>You didn't address that the IRAs movements were pretty much captured
The IRA was infiltrated at varying levels of severity throughout the conflict. People always mention this, but it's very retarded given that the South Armagh Brigade may well have been a different organisation entirely to the rest of the Provisional IRA.

No anon, I'm not being "partisan" it's just that you have a grasp on the conflict similar to a Labour voting lefty from southern England who reckons he's so much cleverer than the people who actually know what happened kekked

well Islam, particularly in prison, serves as a controlled foil adversarial force to Judaism (system default) so Bobby probably got tired of the kike laws, kike manipulation, etc. and overcorrected into Islam. It's a mistake because Islam's very conception was as a false paradigm that Jews could point to as "look they want us all dead" while never acknowledging the chickened Egg that THEY laid by starving the Irish people.
Christ is still the only way out. Christ Consciousness. Not a bible or church, but to embody what and who Christ was. Not living as a martyr, like Islam is funneled into throwing their lives away for. And since the resurrection and jubilee old Caananite rituals dont work old magick doesn't work anymore. In the past, Bobby starving for 70+ days would've conjured a magical force or divine intervention. But now all we have is ourselves on the mortal plane.
I share a first and last name with one of Bobby's fellows who died in the hunger strike. I'm now older than him by a few years too. It's sobering and many other emotions for me. Even if the thread was just a shitpost; I'm glad Bobby's name was written today.

The IRA were anti-EU, believing it was a retarded ponzi scheme for Euro bankers and a shield against any actual good politics for the working class.

Sinn Féin's initial social+economic program during the initial phase of the Troubles would include:
>Both Northern Ireland+Republic of Ireland dissolved
>Replaced with a federal Republic (devolved Ulster government to keep Unionists chill)
>Entire economy framed around self-reliance and avoidance of too much investment in Dublin lest it lead to neglect of the rest of Ireland

Modern Sinn Féin (aka, post-Troubles SF) were anti-EU until Britain became anti-EU at which stage they switched over to being pro-EU, because they're populist fags.

I live in Australia raised by an English Protestant grandma who adored the Catholic church but would never join it. She insisted we were baptised Catholic like all of the children of the Irish family she married into. We grew up with total reverance for the Queen, total cultural Anglophilia while being avowedly Catholic and in contact with Ireland.

Ultimately Ireland will likely reunite as a matter of demographics. Doesn't matter what you think of me

I think it's blown out of proportion. The only people with any ACTUAL animosity (rather than just wink-wink nudge-nudge "hatred" akin to England v France) are those in the North, and it's absolutely justified in that case. But yes, you are right that many of them still tuned into watch the Royals.

Obviously less so as the Troubles went on but for many they were just celebrities and these big events in somewhere semi-familiar to them drew crowds. I do apologise if I come off as defensive or patronising, I'm an autist with how I type, but I think the dismissive tone in your first post just came of as typical foreign drivel about this place.

>>
>>541688462
>Who were the good guys in all of this
Sounds like a reddit answer but there just weren't any.

The main paramilitary factions of the Troubles are thus:
>Provisional IRA
The most "traditional" Irish Nationalist paramilitary. Still socialist, but rejecting "Marxism" in favour of Irish Republican nationalism and military defiance against Britain.
>Official IRA
The Marxists, who believed in moving away from violence and toward building a marxist movement in Ireland.
>UVF/UDA/Other Loyalists
Less of a strategy than the Republicans, they simply didn't want any concessions to the Irish. If there's a "bad guy" it's probably the UDA/UFF, who spent most of the conflict just shooting random civilians.

You will not find an Americanised faction here; the Ulster Loyalists are certainly the most "right wing" but Ulster Unionism as an ideology has mostly always been about hating the micks and not much more-they are the most conservative/right wing people in Ireland but also worship Israel.

Basically your best hope is:
>Pro-Irish
Provisional IRA, on the basis of being the least Marxist and the most straightforward in their motivation; defend their people, take the fight to the guys terrorising them. Mostly prior to the 1980s takeover by the faction lead by Gerry Adams.
>Pro-British
UVF, particularly in Gusty Spence's era. After he got sidelined it joined the UDA in getting a bit zany.

>They forgot about eliminating catholics
The Catholic Church has indeed been a historical enemy of the IRA but ultimately the church infrastructure was useful as mediators between the IRA and the authorities. Alec Reid a good example.
