It IS better to be off drugs. But I also agree you kind of need a brain that knows how to feel okay on its own. I have done years with no substances. Gotten fit. Gotten active. And dammit, man, as soon as I try any of my drugs of choice, I'm immediately hooked again because I forget how good it feels. How much happier I am when on substances.
It's not a good thing. But it's how my particular brain works.
I wish I could stay clean. Instead I do a cycle every couple of years where I have to crawl back out of it again and enforce a no-deug rule on myself again.
