For the first year or two, they stuck mainly to military targets, still wanting to win over the conquered people eventually. Now they're just flailing, hitting civilians in hopes they'll demoralize and give up?By now every single Ukrainian hates them, and will never forgive their invasion. Even if Ukraine surrenders today, by absorbing them Russia will be welcoming countless sabateurs and poisoners into their territory. It will be the Irish troubles times a million, Ukraine will be a black hole of resources, destroying any goods bound for Russia and trying to assassinate any government agents.Russia couldn't even genocide and replace the population at this point. Stalin's forced migrations post-ww2 were a brilliant long-term strategy, however cruel, he established productive populations all across Siberia to harvest its natural resources. These had continued to grow and increase productivity until a few years ago, when Putin threw those populations in the meat grinder to spare Moscow and St. Petersburg from the war. Their workforce and mining/logging capacity is crippled for generations to come, you can't just substitute niggers and jeets in the Arctic circle.
