They need either a degree, professional license (like plumbing or electrican), or a Union (like good paid machinist or welders) to set pay and roles. They also want to see that you're willing to stick with something for at least a few years. College isn't necessarily the only way. In big metro areas where more young people have college educations than don't and with current job market going union blue collar makes sense. You don't have to deal with traffic as much. You get off by 2 or 3pm at the latest. You make only slightly less until mid career programmer especially if you aren't a manager or at FAANG. You make money at 18 or 16 (if you go GED route). An associate might get you promotions easier.The biggest benefit is when work is done, it is done. No Slack or MS teams bullshit. Not afterwork Emails. The rest of your day after work is your own. You can do hobbies. Go to a bar for happy hour. Pick up another job bartending for more money and to meet interesting people. If you have kids you can actually be there for and interact with your family unlike the office cuck that gets off work at 5 or 6pm because of mandatory 1 hour series of breaks, and has 1hr 30min traffic minimum assuming you don't have to run errands. Then by the time you get home 7:30 to 8:30pm it's too late to really go out because you have work tomorrow, chores, family responsibilities. Quiet hours in most HOAs or apartments is 10-11pm. So you can't play music. Anyway, I'd advise anybody whose really not passionate about engineering, computer science, or humanities or whatever to just skip uni. You're not going to compete with people that have been doing this stuff as a hobby since they were 12 in this job market. Especially if your academics aren't there.
