In the old days factories or whatever would also do this, but they would at least provide a lot of jobs for the local communities, not so with data centers that are made to run on skeleton crews and bring in specialized labor from outside, so basically you get a jacked up power bill for nothing.At the macro level, theoretically data centers should actually be pretty awesome because they should be automating work and increasing productivity so we could all be working less for more output and usher in star trek luxury space communism or whatever, but because it's all privately owned (even thought it was all trained on public data) and the companies who use it are all privately owned and there is absolutely no mechanism for the public to get any of that back they're primarily going to use it to cut down on labor costs for themselves. That just means less jobs to go around and the people who keep them are going to be expected to work more and put out more productivity.
