There is nothing surprising about this, China being backwards and irrelevant is a historic abnormality. Even during their less lucky decades they were still the top country by GDP, surpassing Britain until the second half of the XIX century. They had always been a manufacturing giant and what happened in late XIX - first half of the XX centuries was not a normal thing for them. Now they are simply taking back their rightful place in the world, which they had occupied for thousands of years. The West is trying to put them down artificially because the thing they fear most is losing their hegemonic positions in the world, since that would render them largely irrelevant. But it is still a fool's errand, because a decaying fading civilizational model cannot possibly stop a functioning one from taking its rightful place in the world. No amount of protectionism or containment will overrule the fact that Western civilization has exhausted itself and has nothing else to offer to the world. For their own good Westerners should accept this and start preparing for a different kind of world, which they are no longer leading.
