Prior to this, everyone had to pass a swim and float test. You had to be able to remain afloat in your BDU's with your ruck. I was able to swim over and carry a full grown negro to the side of the pool with his ruck while I was in full gear myself. Staying afloat is not hard as long as you don't panic and have confidence in the fact that you will just kind of float for the most part.
