Was Jesus a real person?
>>
>>541766463
Yeah we have great sources (four anonymous texts written a hundred years after his supposed lifetime)

>jesus never existed
it's funny how atheists deny Jesus but don't deny any other ancient historical figures. The first history of Cleopatra came from Plutarch and was written more than one hundred years after her death. There is more written about Jesus in the one hundred years after his death than there is written about Julius Ceasar. Why don't atheists deny Cleopatra or Julius Ceasar existed?

Here is a list of ancient historical figures whose existence is widely accepted by historians, even though the evidence for them is weaker than the evidence for Jesus of Nazareth when judged by standard historical criteria (number of sources, independence, dating, and hostile attestation).

Figures with Less Evidence Than Jesus

Socrates (469–399 BC)
Sources: Plato, Xenophon, Aristophanes
Weakness: No writings of his own; all sources are followers or literary critics
Still universally accepted as historical

Pythagoras (c. 570–495 BC)
Sources written 200–500 years later
Weakness: No contemporary evidence; heavily legendary material
Accepted as historical with uncertain details

Spartacus (d. 71 BC)
Sources: Plutarch, Appian (decades later)
Weakness: Few sources; all hostile Roman accounts
Accepted as historical

Hillel the Elder (c. 110 BC–AD 10)
Sources: Mishnah and Talmud (compiled centuries later)
Weakness: No contemporary records; religious tradition only
Accepted as historical Jewish teacher

Buddha (Siddhārtha Gautama, c. 5th century BC)
Sources written 300–400 years after his life
Weakness: No contemporary or hostile sources
Majority of scholars accept his existence

Lycurgus of Sparta
Sources: Plutarch (centuries later)
Weakness: Possibly legendary; no contemporary evidence
Often treated as semi-historical

Apollonius of Tyana
Source: Philostratus (3rd century AD)
Weakness: Single late, hagiographic source
Accepted as a real person; miracles rejected

Why Jesus Has Stronger Evidence
Jesus is attested by:
Multiple independent sources
Hostile non-Christian writers (Tacitus, Josephus, Pliny, Lucian)
Early references (within ~20–60 years)
Embarrassing details (crucifixion)

Conclusion: Many ancient figures are accepted as historical with less evidence than Jesus. Rejecting Jesus’ existence while accepting these figures applies an inconsistent historical standard.

There's little doubt there was a Jewish preacher named Yeshua in the first century Galilee and he was likely crucified due to incredible tensions of the Jewish state in Rome.

Whether he was God (he was and is), or his message was coopted by Paul is another question.

Because no one is claiming that the fate of your eternal soul rests on believing in Julius Caesar or Cleopatra, idiot

>>541766463
no jews made it up.

>>541766700
nobody ever tried to tell me that cleopatra walked on water or that julius caesar turned water into wine
>>
>>541766463
It's plausible that he existed, however he definitely didn't rise from the dead and wasn't the son of God.

Might have been a guy the character was based on but he's about as real as Paul Bunyan. We know the Bible isn't a legitimate source of information because the character himself declared he would be back during the lifetimes of some alive back then to fulfill the Lion of Judah Messianic prophecies and bring his army of angels and rewards. He never showed. Paul (Saul) believed it so much he taught people how to act if they were one of the ones still alive.

so atheists are just rebellious teenagers? their beliefs have nothing to do with evidence and everything to do with resisting authority?
thanks for clearing this up lmao
>>
>>541766463
Of course. Romans acknowledged and recorded his existence.
>>
>>541766923
Caesar had plenty of divinity claims made about him after his death actually

I know his birthday. He did rise from the dead, by the way. Also he was the son of God.

Believing evidence and resisting authority go hand in hand almost 100% of the time

>>541766463
Of course. He still is. He lives forevermore

Thats nice. But the poster was referrring to his lifetime dipshit.

And clearly we're talking about the present and obviously much bigger and more powerful belief / control sysyem here retard.

Or do you think that if we were supposed to worship caesar today, we wouldn't be asking these same questions? Moron.
>>
>>541767501
>get btfo
>begin throwing out baseless accusations to cope
and even then you look retarded because you didn't know there is ample historical evidence for st nicholas having been a real dude (you just emotionally rebel against your dad without looking into it)
>>
>>541766463
That's at least more likely than him being superhuman.
>>
>>541766463
Undoubtedly, his existence is more probable than any other ancient person, the only historical dispute it his supposed resurrection from dead to living
>>
St Paul was real, we have his writings. We know he met numerous apostles including Jesus brother. To say that Jesus never existed is delusional. People lap up all sorts of roman and greek history despite the sources being hundreds of years after.
Couple that with the fact that there were often messiah movements in ancient judea and they always fizzled out once the leader was arrested or killed. The precedent was to abandon messiahs that didnt fufil expectations. To risk your life in a messiah movement in ancient judea you must be absolutrly convinced your messiah A) existed in the flesh (you saw him in person or knew without a doubt he was a walking talking person and not a rumour)
B)fufilled your criteria for a messiah, despite being killed by authorities

Following a false messiah in ancient judea was serious shit. It mean being ostracised, persecuted, killed, asset stripped etc etc.

>We know the Bible isn't a legitimate source of information because the character himself declared he would be back during the lifetimes of some alive back then to fulfill the Lion of Judah Messianic prophecies and bring his army of angels and rewards
No, that is not what the text says. He said some around him would not taste death till they saw the son of Man coming in his kingdom and that prophecy was fulfilled when Jesus returned from the grave after Judas was already dead.

>He never showed
He did.

The separate end times prophecies were predicated on the whole world hearing the Gospel first, which obviously would never happen in the lifetimes of the people he preached to.
See Matthew 23
