My argument was that physical capture of territory is sufficiently costly that destroying it is more efficient and effective. I think that all wars of the last hundred years, from the trenches of WWI to the total war and strategic bombing of WWII to... the trenches of Ukraine, prove that territorial control is a terrible goal in war. It doesn't lead to good outcomes. WWII's eventual territorial advances in the end were the result of failed Nazi territorial pushes and strategic bombing which, contrary to what you're implying about the victor preserving the nuanced skills and industrial influence of local populations, sufficiently destroyed the Nazis' ability to wage war. Capture is a terrible strategy and an even worse goal.
