However, because of the rise of nationalism in that era the people resisted these attempts and completely refused to assimilate, organized uprisings and generally considered being part of Germany a huge injustice, which of course resulted in brutal reprisals. After regaining indpendence in 1918, the new Polish state was very anti-German as a reaction to this history in order to safeguard the nation from being shackled again.
