The plan is, do your apprenticeship at a large company. They will have actual procedures and safety protocols in place. Take any extra training that the company offers. Many suppliers will offer training seminars on their equipment. You need to be a sponge at this stage and learn everything you can. Don't get comfy doing shit work, push your guys for more challenge as much as you can.Try to ask your mechanic how the pricing works. How many hours were estimated to do this work. How much did the equipment cost, etc.Once you are a mechanic, spend a few years with your own helpers in their truck learning to do jobs complete. Slowly start to acquire your own tools - beyond your hand tools - larger equipment you would need to do jobs that the company owns. Eventually get your own truck fitted out. While you still have your company job, take on a few side jobs on weekends. Talk to friends and get your name out there. Make sure you do well to get recommended - if you do good work for one person they may pass your name along ... if you fuck up with one person they will tell everyone. Get the feeling for quoting, buying parts, installing, etc. Eventually you make the move to your own business. With only one truck on the road it will suck. You will be working full days and running around doing estimates and paper work at night. Hopefully you have a wife that could do the banking, invoicing, etc. The newer accounting systems are all online and so easy to use. You will just break even while you are acquiring tools, customers and knowledge. You just need to hang on if you are doing good quality work. Once you have 3 trucks on the road, you will have a great life. You can then play boss man and just get involved with quotes, problems, job startups etc.

The best thing is to eventually start building your own spec homes. Do that for 5-10 years and you'll have enough to retire. The hard part is getting the money for the first house. Once you've got one house built and paid for, you can roll right on along almost as fast as you want to.But, to anybody out there, you don't need a GC in a lot of places to build a house if you have your own money. Most building departments will let you pull all the permits as owner builder. The banks are the ones that require you to have a GC, insurance, bonding, all that. The county just cares about you passing inspections, and they usually require a construction warranty for one year. Which means you can't sell it during that time if you aren't a licensed insured contractor. But, If you have the money, you can buy some land, pull all the permits yourself, then sub out all the work, and you can still make 20-30% when the house sells.
