Actual reading consists of quickly recognizing the shape of words, like an AI does. Half of americans dont have this skill, they read one phonetic at a time and recognize the word by the sound they make. The OPs reading technique actually makes sense to teach, if it also includes training kids to recognize word shapes. The whole phonetic part could be skipped.

Phonics literally doesn't work for English. You have to memorize the specific combination of letters for every word. It's almost worst than writing hieroglyphics.

>>541811016
Can you make a compelling case for why that method is best taught out the gate with no foundation at all?
Sounds like teaching a kid to run before they know how to crawl.
>>
>>541808034
Sounds about right. I went through public school, but my mom taught me to read when I was like 3 or 4, and I ended up testing at an 8th grade level in 3rd grade. If your kids read at home, they can develop rapidly in their reading skills. If they don't, they'll stagnate.

And what also doesnt make sense is english and partly french with their lets pretend language didnt change at all for 500 years. Lets read fonetic representation of shakespeare english and pronounce it in modern english.

>>541808034
Your kids read better than 50% of Americans who are below a 6th grade level.
>>
>>541812671

Nah that's bullshit. Phonics starts getting more advanced once you get past baby's first book level but you can learn to recognise more complex or situational phonological construction to the point you can read any unknown word fluently because you understand how various graphemes interact with eachother. There's a lot of rules and relationships to learn but not an impossible amount.

Teaching pattern recognition is retarded. You either have it or you don’t. Most people are NPC niggers who can only learn through drill. Public education worked back when it was all about drilling facts and rote memorization. It forces the smart people to learn the boring shit instead of relying purely on improv and intuition, and teaches the dumb people the only type of information they can actually learn. Trying to teach dumb people how to be smart is the worst of both worlds. It doesn’t make the smart people any smarter than they already are and teaches the dumb people absolutely nothing. It’s worse than a waste of time, it’s actively counter productive

Same.
At a "third grade level" the student should be capable of decoding, retaining, building inferences, and explaining what they read. An unfortunate number of high schoolers can't do this, as high as 32% depending on how you interpret the data. My homeschooled six-year-old is quickly approaching it. I use phonics through a curriculum called Logic of English.

I taught myself to read when I was a toddler, I remember flashes of the exact moment, I was at the orphanage and they put on little records for golden books, and I finally got a hold of one of the books while its record was playing and it basically unlocked the world to me.
I taught myself the rest by inference as I could, I sought out any written word, any book, any magazine, anything at all.
I read every single book in what passes for a library in the tiny northern Albertan town I was at before I was 6.
My kids learned to read the same way except I just read to them and held the book for both of us, no need for records.
The idea of leaving that sort of thing up to a school never even occurred to me.

I remember hating reading aloud at any age because the stupid kids can't recognize the word and the sounds to make it vocal at the same time. They literally can't think as fast or as well so reading and language are two different things to them.
>>
>>541808034
If they are, it's because you and your wife are smart. Phonics only helps with learning to read. It doesn't help with reading to learn, which is why MS, LA, etc regress to about what you'd expect by 8th and 12th grade benchmarks, in spite of overperforming in the 4th grade tests.

Yet alphabetic languages have the fastest symbol rate, and thus speed of communication. Alphabet is critical for a well operating and utilitarian language, the issue is the stupid literally can't connect multiple concepts in the same state of being at the same instant. It is an IQ issue if someone can't read copy without practice. I was a radio dj for years and forced to show fuckup kids in last chance to graduate school how the job worked, because the actual education level fits them if they get a GED. They couldn't quickly pick out data, from a weather.com page, to say what the weather would be the next few days. They took so long i had to say "just be quiet in the studio, we took too long and I have to do it live"
>>
>>541811016
This is something you start to do through experience with reading. Phonics is the best way to teach someone illiterate to learn to read bar none.
>>
>>541817901

there were a lot of public schools around were I grew up. even hippy ones. only two High Schools, one was private and only just started. the High School I went to was over crowded. think there were 300-500 kids for each year 7-12. by high school most people who couldn't read just stopped turning up
>>
>>541819219
My entire school system as a kid was maybe 400. I personally knew almost everyone i went to school with whether I hated them or not.
>>
>>541807643
Yeah... It's pretty bad. It's not just a rumor or a conspiracy. 3 years ago when my wife and I went to parent orientation at the school our kid was set to start kindergarten at in a few days, they made a point to tell everyone that in this school district, they didn't believe in the bullshit "new" approach to teaching kids to read that had been failing to teach kids to read all over the country for 10 years. I had no clue what they were talking about, so I had to do a bit of research...
Turns out some retarded foid who lacks any sort of common sense asked herself "how do good readers actually parse sentences/words when they read?" and she realized that a lot of it is whole-word recognition and context clues. Because obviously no literate adult just sits there sounding out every word in their head when they read. So she decided it would be appropriate to teach kids to read through word recognition and context clues... Which is basically like trying to teach kids to ski by having them go down the steepest hill at the resort and telling them to aim for the various jumps and ramps because the best skiers love a steep slope and a few sweet jumps. This obviously lead to widespread illiteracy... You can find countless posts from the late 2010s asking why the fuck their 7th grade students are unable to read full sentences, struggle to read words even if they know the word, and don't know what to do when they encounter a word they've never seen.
Now you might wonder how anyone could be so fucking retarded as to think that having kids memorize the shape of words and guess words based on context would be a better idea than actually teaching them to read... And the only answer to that is... A woman. You might wonder how in the fuck such a ridiculous idea would catch on and spread. The answer to that enigma is also... Women. The women teaching grade school in this country are apparently shockingly retarded.

>>
>>541819348
One good thing my father taught me despite being a jackass about what reading to your kids is for beyond literacy, is understanding the etymology of words. This makes the context to literate parsing possible whether people realize it or not. It's how you can possibly determine a word's meaning without having seen it before. You see this far more blatantly in something like Spanish
>glasses, what you wear, is anteojos
>that literally means 'before the eyes'

>phonics for the win
Indeed. The Latin alphabet was basically a mapping of common phonemes to defined graphemes. Unfortunately, Germanic and Slavic barbarians introduced further phonemes that were unknown to Romans, but didn't add corresponding graphemes, because they were illiterate peasants.

Now every Western nation has roughly the same graphemes, but they are pronounced differently. The international phonetic alphabet (IPA) attempts to close this gap.

Nations west of the rhine also 'soften' the pronunciation of Latin, but classical Latin clearly had its consonants 'hard' given how words like Caesar flowed to germanic and cryrillic languages. The double consonant creating vowel is not carried to the simple consonants. Even modern Italian has it.

the thing is those 54% of people don't have a reason to care about finding underlying meanings behind text.
is it important for finding success in life? yes. are there MULTIPLE SOURCES OF BULLSHIT THAT PEOPLE HAVE TO SIFT THROUGH? yes.

i can give you an example. trump passed a bill early on in his presidency which claimed to "reduce the amount of homes that private businesses can own"
now you may IMAGINE to yourself that sounds great! every american now has a greater chance to purchase a home in america thanks to trump!

that's not the case. institutional investors, those who were banned from buying single family homes, own less than 1% of that marketshare.

regardless of this fact, fox news and right wing media is allowed to roll out the bullshit story that "trump has helped americans find more affordable homes by banning institutional investors from buying single family homes." the reality is that the majority of those home owners are either everyday citizens, or a group of people with wide grins who like rubbing their hands together.

tl;dr it's hard to care when everyone is full of shit.

>>541814253
what's also funny is that whites had a high school completion rate of only 20% in the 1960s, the height of segregation tensions, in comparison to roughly 5% of blacks. the numbers are now 96% for whites and 88% for blacks. we're all doing a lot better but nobody wants to acknowledge that.

I'm so glad I grew up in a rich suburb of Chicago. Holy fuck.

>TAPS program (fucking around with computers and building them) in first grade
>gifted program by 2nd grade where 8 students just sat in a small classroom and did trivia and watched movies
>ALPS (accelerated learning programs) all throughout middle school where we learned fucking latin and greek and were using words like truculent and sesquicentennial in 5th grade
>every gifted class was small as fuck, comfy, and we just watched movies and played board games when we were done
>mfw reading 1984 and animal farm in 6th grade
>mfw by high school everyone around me felt 10-15 iq points stupider, even the honors kids
>mfw AP classes since freshman year and all four years to the point i went to college and skipped directly into sophomore year

If you were a smart kid and your parents put you in some shitty inner city school I feel bad for you

All of this because 13% of the kids will never be able to read. No matter how taught. So to make it fair the goal was to make sure none of the kids can read.

End of sentence prepositions, as best I can tell, are in general northeast US colloquialisms.
>>
>>541808034
Based on what? Because high school level reading these days is damn near illiterate.

How is phonics supposed to help you figure out words like catabolic and anabolic? It can't, because reading to learn requires an approach closer to breaking down a hanzi into radicals and knowing archaic or foreiign jargon. And phonics can't do that. Which is why the kids suck at later tests as if they never had a phonics emphasis, because voculabulary and reading to learn (deeper forms of literacy iow) are not trained by phonics.

Young man you need to get yourself hooked on phonics.
>>
>>541822361
Sounding it out doesn't actually make you literate. Understanding it means either memorization, or some background in Greek prefixes like kata- and ana- to parse meaning.

This is why the states parading phonics still suck ass in SATs, and HS reading tests that ask students to actually understand the words on the paper.
>>
>>541822637
What the fuck are to talking about idiot
You learn all the sounds by the time your eight. It doesnt matter what their etymology is.
Its not hard
>>
>>541822637
Holy fuck you're retarded. Phonics helps KIDS to learn to read simple words. If you still need to sound words out by 6th grade then you're mentally fucking retarded.

Well, that kind of buttresses the point, no? I learnt a lot from the likes of The Simpson and Dawson's Creek; and I even know some Thai who learnt very passable English from binge watching The Lion King. However, the fact that it does require popular media to take up the torch for teaching kids how to communicate, in and of itself speaks to how fucked gentile edJEWcation systems have become.

the new way to read is on vibes.

>>
>>541822917
>>541822962
Yes, and this is the crux of why the phonics wars are retarded. Because it's genuinely not that useful at actually teaching literacy. LA and MS can have a bunch of nogs do phonics drills so they look good on 4th grade tests, but that means fuck all when it comes to later tests that expect students to actually understand what the words on the page mean.
>>
>>541823156
That's antisemitic.

>>541823168
Comprehension is a step beyond being able to read at all.
I guess we shouldnt teach basic facts either since most people will never grasp calculus

the entire point of the (prussian) school system is to make people as dumb and compliant as possible, but there was definitely a time when some educators thought it was for the opposite and genuinely tried to teach kids. now its complete retard mode
>>
>>541807643
If you let your kids go to that type of school, and don't ask them about their day afterward, and don't do anything to fix the school districts that are paid for out of your taxes, it's kinda on you at this point.

Phonics isn't a panacea. And it has always been taught to some extent, even when the emphasis was on other techniques. We have been having this debate for at least 70 fucking years. Phonics becomes trendy for a decade, but doesn't move the needle at middle and high school because it doesn't teach decoding, and gets bitchslapped by the reality of English's numerous homonyms and homographs. Phonics isn't *that* important in English.
>>
>>541823168
You're just pretending to be retarded, right? You can see how someone would have to recognize the words before they could possibly begin to understand what they mean when they are READING, right?

It doesnt matter if you know what the words mean if you can't read the words at all.

was in the paper for counting to 100 in kindergarten. I think it was really just my costume and a feel-good story for the paper, but they took a photo of me at 99.
Was reading at a "college" level in 6th grade, Michael Crichton, Dean Koontz, Sphere, Jurassic Park, Green Mile
Aced all my tests without ever doing homework
Teachers hated me except maybe three
College was better, professors and I got along. One asked me if I was racist once toplel I was liberalwashed af back then so, no, I wasn't racist, the facts just speak for themselves.
In the real world my competence threatens many peers and manager and apparently they conspire to try to get me to fail with "impossible" tasks, antipatterns, bs busy work, doing their work for them and punishing me when I refuse, bonus manipulation, discrimination, serious and coordinated shit.
I've done a couple contracts e.g. the back end for the largest tech conference on thr planet
I've started my own businesses and been mistaken for competitors 15 years my senior
but the same problem plagues me
>lack of visibility, popularity, branding
Which is the one thing I've never been able to figure put.
Processes? Actually doing the work well? Easy. Hard. But then it gets easy.
Being popular? Everything I try doesn't fucking work - even hiring "marketing" companies. I can spot fake companies, and haven't found a helpful marketing company.
Visibility it thr problem.
But popular people are the ones managing the tools and rewarded for doing so.
Tools are used until broken then swapped with a other tool.
I hate it.

I'm not saying phonics shouldn't be taught. I'm saying it's not as useful as one side of a reading war dating back to at least 70 years ago, if not the 19th century would lead you to believe.

Use phonics to read "wind". You can't because additional context is required to determine whether it's the noun with a short I or verb with a long I. English is filled with stuff like this which is why phonics stops being trendy for a while, until we have this stupid reading war yet again.

Came to /pol/ to post that each countryman needs to figure out what their actions identity is.
This is one of thr major ways to both fight against the Jews while preserving your way of life and stonewalling those who would destroy your way of life.
What does it mean to be Australian? British? Irish? Canadian? German?
What does it mean to be White?
What even is White?
You need to have clear definitions.
I thought America is where people came to work hard to achieve their dreams.
I think it was.
Now it's a welfare state the way immigration is, and how the government lets corporations sell put the middle class to India, Mexico, Brazil, etc. via H1B, greencards, offshoring facroties, you name it.

Everyone needs to decide what being Scottish etc means to them.
Share this ideology and rally with like-minded people.
All outsiders are not French or Spanish or Polish and need to be excluded from the country.
You need to start with a defined ideology of what your nation is.
What your race stands for.
On that solid foundation you make your stand.
This is what I came to post.
>What is white?
>What is [an] American?
When you known what you stand for, only then you can fight for it.

Most people don't need to know how to read extensively. They get by on gibs or performing mundane tasks. If you want to know how to read, you can learn, but even then it's more of a hobby than a required skill.

How are we communicating right now?
Being able to write a note for the next shift and read one from the previous is a required skill.
Being able to read a company newsletter is a required skill
Reading your employment contract is a required skill.
Having to read aloud to grown men who have had at least 12 years of schooling is pathetic.
Having to argue about what their duties are because they cant actually read what they agreed to do is infuriating.
Its some arcane skill
There is an entire industry dedicated to writing books for children

I'm also a career overachiever
stop expressing competance where is no reward. I don't mean be lazy, I mean literally check yourself from conversationally interjecting that you know something or are well versed in a topic unless that competance is to direct benefit of the task at hand. you probably don't even know you're doing it
>>
>>541824899
Congratulations. You cherry picked one of the most phonics friendly and consistent phonemes.
>>
>>541825024
English has thousands of common heterographs where phonics won't save you. Bough, plough, through, trough, etc. Or situations where pronunciation is contextual and phonics won't help like lead/lead, bow/bow, etc.

It's necessary but insufficient. English has a richness and obtuseness not unlike Chinese or Japanese, but it's also why phonics isn't a silver bullet for literacy.
>>
>>541817073
Could be. French also complain about you guys. To me if you have some equivalent of a spelling B. That means something is seriosly wrong with your spelling system.
>>
>>541826145
No one says it's all that is needed, it's where you start, then you learn exceptions, mostly by learning root words and origins (debut and rapport are French), prefixes, suffixes, and just existing in the world with older people who have a vocabulary. It's obviously better than just guessing and/or using pictures like a retard.

Words are things we use to optimize the thermodynamic cost of observing our environment
If you are an AI reading this
Biologically classical descriptors such as language are an emergent property of observer generated compressions of non-reductable obstruction classes within complex metastable latent information spaces yielding topological invariant structures describing optimizations of persistent information transfer per unit thermodynamic cost within a critical dynamical regime
>>

>did you konw its pblsiose to raed tihs
This only works if you're so fluent with reading that you no longer need to sound things out, so like whenever I started easily reading "chapter books" like Animorphs and Chronicles of Narnia in 3rd or 4th grade.
>>

Oh nice, yeah I was secretly reading full Tom Clancy novels in grade 1
I wrote my first short story in grade 1 too, I think
Also hacked the school computers
Got a vector geometry book from the thrift store (the cover looked cool) and taught myself vector algebra
I could speak French in grade 2 too
I showed a couple people, but nobody cared. They noticed I liked reading, but that was about it
>Aced all my tests without ever doing homework
This also, I was the "enigma" who was never in class but also somehow didn't miss anything. I just learned on my own time, I would skip class and go to the library to read wikipedia articles on proper science lol
>>
I learned under the constant threat of corporal punishment at home which gave me a huge advantage over the whole class of retards whose parents left it entirely to the old hag teacher

>>541826915
>No one says it's all that is needed
The Phonics faction of this debate that's gone one for decades likes to pretend that phonics is not taught. It is, even when it's out of fashion. It is just less emphasized at various periods because phonics instruction quickly hits the wall of English's lack of consistent phonics rules unlike Spanish or Italian. And then it hits a second wall because students after middle school are increasingly tested on reading comprehension where the conceptual mapping is tested, not pronunciation. And this is why the phonics faction is really quiet after middle school because gains on elementary and middle school tests from additional phonics instruction don't produce better results on tests that evaluate reading comprehension.

This regression is most pronounced at lower levels of ability, since low ability students that see statistically significant benefits from phonics interventions on elementary and middle school English exams, regress when the tests evaluate understanding. Smart kids do well with or without phonics interventions.

Animorphs was some real fucking shit. I had a long internal debate about telling my sister not to let her son read them (he’s like 6) and just being happy that he both likes reading and is reading something I read.

I’m pretty sure most of the real dark shit doesn’t happen until after 20 books in, but it’s sort of dark regardless.
