Ranked choice voting will fix this. But to understand why you gotta understand the problem first.If you are a moderate, then your biggest threat is from the other side of the aisle. If you are moderate, you may appear simply as a watered down version of the other blue/red candidates.But if you're not moderate then the biggest threat to a potential candidate doesn't come from the "other side of the aisle" but from within your own party. Look at the 2016 GOP primary and you'll gain some insight. They had a dozen candidates, and the guy who won was the guy who stood out the most. How did he stand out? By being an extremist. That is what is necessary to beat the other people in your own party. You need to out crazy everyone else and stand out from the crowd. Over time the candidates have to out crazy each other just to even have a chance. Hence over time both the GOP and Dems (tho it's happening more slowly for the Dems) more and more extreme.So how does ranked choice help with that problem?? Because a single party can put up 2 candidates, who instead of competing with each other for votes, they instead give each other votes. You can have the extremists of the party, and then have the moderate of the party. For those who vote as party loyalists, their first vote will be either extremist or loyalist of their chosen party and 2nd choice will be a 2nd from the same party. There will be some who don't vote along party lines, and instead vote only for moderates, but that is their choice, no?
