It’s just American social status obsession. When you have no real culture you cling to money as if it indicates what a terrific person you are. I’ve seen this behaviour even among children of American tourists. They laugh at their peers that can’t afford certain shoes/toys/gadgets/phones/whatever and say ”haha u r poor!”. When your country is defined by how many hours of work you put in so that you can buy a large house, cars, expensive clothes and everything inbetween then laughing or mocking those that are not as wealthy as you are shows how fundamentally shallow you are.
