The average current cost for a packet of 20 cigarettes is AUD 40 / ~USD 29 We have an insane excise which has created an environment where violent criminal groups and their black market tobacco now capture 80% of the market. Our emergent 3rd party disrupting the political duopoly proposed a 75% cut to the excise AUD 10 / ~USD 7Now the totally buckbroken opposition coalition has come to play proposing an 80% excise cut resulting in 8 AUD / USD ~6Will these proposed prices remove the incentive for criminal networks to import cheap cigarettes (often bootlegs of real brands)?

A 13 year old could deduce that placing a 300% excise on a high demand product will obviously lead to a flourishing black market for it. This should provide some kind of insight that the tyrannical shit that the government does is not necessarily borne out of some kind of rational calculation that they can get away with it but rather just birdbrained bureaucrats assuming they can get away with anything
