Escaping is just a matter of letting go and sliding outward, whereas going inward you have to fight against centrifugal force. Since inside stuff is moving faster, we have to speed up by a lot, spinning faster and faster.It's actually more energy efficient to escape the solar system, so our speed around the sun is zero, and then just fall directly into it, than it is to get to mercury just by speeding up. But it takes forever and also you can't orbit anything like that, you just fall into the sun, so we don't do it.
