I've talked about issues I was having with my friends, but friends aren't going to delve into your childhood to find the root cause like a proper psychologist would. Therapy is real. A lot of medical conditions are also never cured. Like Herpes, or HIV, or Dementia or Congestive Heart Failure. But you know what doctors can do? They can treat it and reduce symptoms and increase life span and quality of life.

All of that is also true for therapists, psychology, psychiatry. Psychology is full of literally thousands of papers a year showing improvement of symptoms, lower suicide rates, and overall improved quality of life with new methods and treatments. It is a constantly evolving field with some of the strictest and most difficult statistics in any field. In material sciences you measure purity of a sample and only need to test strength once. With people, there is more variation and archetypes, and you need very large sample sizes. You have to control for confounds, like history effects, learning curves, and personal habits. Things like a religious holiday can throw off a study, or using a convenient sample instead of a random.

Here is a good example. Psychology has produced therapy to reduce or eliminate phobias. This example is clean and clear, reproducible, major outcome performance changes for patients. Say a patient suffers from arachnophobia and flinches away from anything resembling a spider. Show them images of spiders, then make them touch the images, then videos, etc, it starts off with whatever they can handle and goes as far as they are willing to take it, up to the point of handling a live spider. They do this, and maybe they still really dislike spiders, but they don't have a meltdown and crash when they see one in their car anymore. They can deal with it enough to safely pull over now. Are they cured? No. Does it impact their life in an uncommon way? Not anymore. That is the goal.

Everyone is a little bit of everything, so the rule of thumb is, you seek therapy or help when it's disrupting your life. And you stop therapy if you're life is back to normal.

Some therapy is bullshit. Some is real. We have accounts of PTSD that go back as far as the ancient greeks, they just didn't have a name for it they just said "he came back from the war much changed" and then described the symptoms of PTSD.

Grief counseling is real. Psychiatry is not just real but for many people with neurodivergent brain chemistry almost mandatory, because good like finding the cocktail of drugs you need to be a functional person without a prescription.

There are always going to be hacks out there that feed people's insecurities to bilk them from sessions, but thats no different from manosphere self improvement guys or any other snake oil salesman that promise you a way to make yourself happy and fulfilled.

But therapy can, at best, help you understand and confront your problems. Fixing them is still on you.
