The German SS men had to be of exceptional moral character, no criminal history, no substance abuse, and of high physical and mental health. Only 10-15% of applicants were accepted. They were by all accounts astonishingly normal men. The vast majority had not seen action in WW1 but lived through it as children, most were born between 1895-1915. They understood the humiliation of the WW1 defeat being surrounded by combat veterans and entered adulthood during the Weimar collapse, revolutions, assassinations, and the 1923 hyperinflation was their youth. Most of the Freikorps WW1 veterans did not join the NSDAP the SS were fresh soldiers.The Einsatzgruppen specifically were the same with the addition that most had university education. Einsatzgruppen were not psychopaths, the NSDAP had already executed all of the criminally insane, habitual criminals, and those of low moral character. This is reflected in the fact that so many of the commanders were traumatised to the point of hallucinations, nervous breakdowns, and liver failure from excessive drinking, with alcohol being used as a cope at every single execution site. They had to rotate the commanders out every couple months and Himmler himself suffered a near nervous breakdown after requesting that Einsatzgruppen Commander B (Nebe) execute 100 civilians in front of him, after it happened he was literally shaking and shouting, then deciding a better way must be found to prevent moral decay. During the Riga ghetto liquidation a commander tried to outsource the job of close range headshotting to the Latvian's but they became too drunk to continue. The trigger pullers themselves, ordinary SS, were not rotated, they suffered bouts of uncontrollable vomiting, full body rashes, hallucinations, insomnia, and the persistent alcoholism. As it turns out, normal people are not designed to massacre other people enmass. Imagine the smell.
