If a smart and informed career politicians does something wrong, they are punished for it because they should know better. If they work in favor of their investors and donors, there's less obfuscating their motives, you can more easily blame them for corruption. With people like Trump supports and people neutral to him can more easily chalk up any failure or bad move to him being impulsive and dumb. They don't see him as calculating or responsible, they didn't elect him because they thought he was smart and responsible.
