>President Donald Trump on Friday threatened to cut off trade with countries with which the United States runs a trade deficit unless the Federal Reserve reduces interest rates.>Trump posted the threat on Truth Social, responding to August payroll figures showing 162,000 jobs added — a result that topped forecasts. "LOWER THE RATE OR I'LL STOP TRADING WITH COUNTRIES WITH WHICH WE HAVE A DEFICIT," Trump wrote, adding that high interest rates put the U.S. at "a very unfair disadvantage."https://www.yahoo.com/news/politics/articles/trump-threatens-trade-cutoff-fed-141142300.html

>>541983374The trade deficit increases since he's been in office are almost entirely driven by big tech importing materials for data center build-outs. Cutting off trade with those countries would only make inflation worse, because US corporations would be forced to switch to more expensive vendors. More realistically, it would simply destroy American AI progress.

>>541983812It's always been an option. It's only people who don't understand money (conservative voters) who don't understand this. The Federal Reserve is a monopoly operation. It can set the rate wherever it wants to achieve whatever goal.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pex89N9Oqoghttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=je-1eTl6J0ghttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Q8c9Z7Dexshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vW3J5LBVfGcI would say, though, that Trump's general position on trade deficits are not entirely correct. There is a risk from importing too much -- namely that you lose the capability or that the imports go away -- but it's not so simplistic.
