Fairbanks, Alaska — On June 28, 2026, at approximately 6:00 p.m., the Fairbanks Emergency Communication Center received a report from an off-duty probation officer who reported the location of 32-year-old Brandon Roberts. Roberts had an active warrant related to a prior burglary conviction, and the probation officer reported that Roberts, a convicted felon, was believed to be carrying a firearm. FPD officers and Alaska State Troopers responded to the Bentley Mall parking lot on College Road. When officers located Roberts, he immediately fled on foot. During the ensuing pursuit, Roberts drew a handgun. Two FPD officers and one Alaska State Trooper fired their weapons, striking Roberts several times. Once officers determined there was no longer a threat, they approached Roberts and provided emergency medical care until Fairbanks Fire Department EMS personnel arrived. Roberts was transported to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. Investigators processed the scene and recovered Roberts’ 9mm Glock handgun and ammunition. On August 31, 2026, the Alaska Office of Special Prosecutions (OSP) completed its independent review of the incident and determined that the two FPD officers and one Alaska State Trooper who used deadly force were legally justified in doing so. Based on that determination and the applicable law, the Office of Special Prosecutions concluded that criminal charges are not warranted against the officers involved.
