The American colonists did not wish to be ruled by a foreign power who did not represent their interest and pursued their own agenda with the tax money the colonists were paying and essentially received nothing except protection in return. A protection, it's worth noting, that felt less like a security force and more like an occupying army. Add on the fact that Britain could change their laws, set the duties on their purchases, ban their media on a whim. The southern cause is basically the same. The north had grown so large and populated (mostly through immigrants) that it essentially owned the federal government. The southern states were essentially a colony of the north, who could tax the South with impunity, occupy them, set the federal laws, set the tariffs on their trade and decide how much they were taxed. That's honestly justifies secession off the bat, just based on the precedent set by the colonists who declared independence form Britain. It's why the Confederacy declaration of independence from the union was not in response to any particular law or ban on slavery. It was in response to Lincoln being elected without one southern electoral vote. The South was basically given the proof of their own occupation in that moment. The federal government could rule them without needing represent them at all. Just like Britain and the American colonies.They were well aware that a ban on slavery was coming, which would weaken the south even more against northern dominance. Since the agrarian south relied on for any kind of economic prosperity.Based on all of this, it's hard to see the south as anything except a colony trying to break away from a larger power that ruled it without offering the people any political representation.
