Because multiple generations in the US have grown up in a global atmosphere where they actually were the amin characters, driving the plot. Since the start of the Cold War and until the collapse of the USSR they were the "good guys", spreading democracy and freedom, while combating he evil of communism. They were the beacon of liberty and prosperous way of life for more than half of the world and their victory over the USSR only made them more confident in their mission. After the collapse they basically had the entire world all to themselves and could do almost whatever with it. Even right after the formation of the US they had the manifest destiny concept, which they pretty much fulfilled and built a prosperous nation over empty land all thanks to their system, which they regard as holy. It is hard not to acquire the "main character" complex when you are so successful in everything you do. It is only now that they are facing real domestic problems rooted in the imperfections of their system and are having a real competitor in the face of China. Which is why they are struggling with finding a new identity so much - the word they had gotten used to is fading and they are forced to face that their founding principles are not as universal as previously believed. But the "main character complex" is hard to abandon, it will take time.
