In my experience, bullies are feminine people who hide behind posturing and group tactics to reinforce their social status to protect against themselves becoming the targets of the same behavior. They're not the type of person to just end something with violence or anything that cuts to the heart of a matter. I defended myself and proved I was above those few who tried to bully me in school but I never felt any respect for those whose respect I "earned" after I humiliated their "lead bully". I only ever felt disgust for them, though I never showed it. I imagine in less civilized times those people would be among the first to be conquered by those who actually take themselves and their peace seriously. People on this website say it's a good thing and should be brought back though. Are we thinking of the same thing? Or are you talking about something more in line with well intentioned corrective banter?
