When searching for the next possible move, if two different games reach the same board state then the search space going forward is the same, despite the different path taken to get there, so talking just about total number of potential games is a bit misleading. This most certainly reduces the number of possible games that need to be evaluated, including duplicate work in case a game has repeated board states (although, I would think, this would be quite rare outside of endgames).

Elon is mostly correct though.

The pruned tree of sensible chess moves has a structure of regularities that's simple enough that a human brain can pretty much master seeing many moves ahead. All the talk of the number of moves being larger than the atoms in the universe is rubbish because we discard nearly all of them with simple rule heuristics.

A better pattern recognition machine than the brain could scape the barrel.

>>542060788
Elon is absolutely correct about the oom part. You don't solve chess by needing all histories, all you need is the states because histories collapse on the same states. The estimated amount of chess states ~10^44 is significantly lower than ~10^80 atoms in the observable universe. Plus, there is legitimate possibility of compressing this, although speculative.

>All the talk of the number of moves being larger than the atoms in the universe is rubbish because we discard nearly all of them with simple rule heuristics.
from what I understand the reason the whole particle nr thing is used in computational analogies is meant to show that if you could somehow use a single atom for a computation, you'd need more than all that exist, to build a observable universe computer that would be able to start calculating them, using every atom as a compute unit.
this is of-course insanity, as even a computer bit larger than our sun would just collapse into a blackhole from all the mass it has (it would be quite dense).

>>
>>542063086
He said legal positions which is the amount of possible chess states.
Amount of moves that are "not utterly stupid" is an additional claim on top of that.

Chess intern retard thinks you need ~10^120 of all unique games chess possibly can have.
But all you need is ~10^44 of possible states because game histories don't matter.
This is many oom lower than the amount of atoms in the observable universe ~10^80.

That doesn't mean it's solved, as the moves they're playing could still be potentially be beaten by a given set of moves. There needs to be proof that the moves they're playing are dominating and there exist no other possible set of better moves. For example going second could mean that, under optimal conditions, the best result can only be a tie, potentially even strictly losing, but that remains to be seen.

I know I might sound crazy, but we truly in a wondrous and beautiful timeline in history. In this era, a common peasant (chess.com moderator earning maybe $50k/year salary) can hurl verbal abuses, insults, and horrible cuss words towards an important wealthy and politically well-connected nobleman (Elon Musk), and not be beaten to death, or flayed alive, or tortured for it.

>>

He said "legal chess positions". As in chess states. As in the amount of distinct unique states you could possibly have on the board. And he was indeed correct, that number is roughly 10^44. This is all you need for solving chess. You do not understand this topic whatsoever. You are a retarded liar, charlatan, and loser. This claim has nothing to do with "sensible" or "not sensible", these are indeed all possible states.

And then, those possible states can further be compressed (the speculative part).

Why do you insist on being wrong?

>>542064292
In theory it's trivially solved by searching, but there's an area of computation known as complexity theory which studies things such as how long a computer will take to solve a problem or how much space is required to solve one. It takes computers too long to apply trivial solutions, such as simple searching, so much so that it would require more space than atoms in the universe or time that has passed since the beginning of creation for example. To be clear, chess has yet to be solved but other games such as checkers have been. I believe Go was recently solved as well.
>>
>>542064618
If your opponent makes a suboptimal move you're simply in a more winning position than you were previously. You don't need to require your opponent to do anything as the assumption is that your opponent will already make the optimal play. However, it may alter your future moves, but the position will simply be more winning than had they made the best one.

He's mostly right though. Chess is a non-dynamic game, meaning there is no room for randomness, luck, bursts of uncharacteristic skill or willpower, etc, like most other games or sports. It's just an autistic spreadsheet game where the sperg who memorizes the most shit and forgets the least wins. Chess is rarely even decided by decisive offensive moves, at high levels it's just whatever autist made a 2% less efficient move in the first 10-20 moves and the domino effect results in a slightly worse position in the endgame which results in a loss. It's pure, unadulterated autism with virtually none of the other elements that make competition actually fun and exciting.

Yes, and Musk's argument is that artificial superintelligence will somehow find a strategy or a set of complex heuristics that will essentially allow this. it's basically solved already. when you use bit maps, bit masks and bit shifting,
there's so much memory tomfoolery and optimization you can do to represent chess, it's nuts.
basically a board is bits. a move is a bit shift. and rules are bit masks.
every per move test becomes a per node set.
it's basically already solved mathematically, no one implements it this way though for some unknown reaon

Elon isn't wrong
Humans have been completely irrelevant to high level chess play for 20+ years
Chess will be functionally solved long before it's actually solved (same thing happened with checkers), but the difference does not have a practical impact on evaluation accuracy
Personally, I've moved onto other abstract games that haven't been studied to death, like the gipf project. Dvonn is brilliant, and I don't have to deal with some midwit who has remembered the opening 15 moves of a main variation.

It's not a question of game length, it's a question of figuring out the absolute best move that each side can play. The answer at the end of that question is either going to be a win for white or a draw (vanishingly small chance it would be a win for black). I'm inclined to say perfect play from both sides is a draw.
>>
>>542060788
>Chess needs to be perfectly solved to be functionally solved
the first 20-30 moves have been already been optimized, and EVERY chess ending featuring 7 or fewer pieces total (including both kings) has been completely, perfectly solved. This means grand mastership is a matter of memorizing the these pathways at the start and at the end, and having enough knowledge to correctly execute the connecting 15-20 average moves from opening to endgame. Anyone with photographic memory and an IQ above 110 can become a champion now; it used to be reserved for extreme outlier geniuses. Talk to any chess champion, they'll admit it's largely a memorization trick.

While it's mathematically not possible to perfectly solve chess using computation (look up Shannon Number), it doesn't need to be brute force strong-solved, to be functionally solved. One more major iteration in computing power, like say quantum, and it will reduce the average connecting moves between the optimized opening, and the solved ending, down to 5-10 moves. Even a fucking midwit can be taught to think 5-10 moves ahead.

That's functionally solved.

Elon's basically correct.

>Infinite moves
No, but practically yes because it's astronomically high.

Keep in mind the overwhelming majority of possible chess moves will absolutely never be played by a person who understands even the most basic concepts of play. Chess, in my opinion, is a pretty shit game on the whole. It isn't solved, but might as well be because once you study it for a couple of months you can pretty easily read board states and optimal moves and it starts to feel like a fucking Rubik's Cube more than an interactive player vs player competitive game.
>>
>>542068974
If it's fully solved, players could just memorize that line, whether it's 40, 50, 60 moves, whatever.
But as soon as one player deviated from the line, whether the other player could still achieve the best outcome would come down to their memory of that variation.
>>
File: Chess complexity.png (98 KB, 837x662)

>>542062278
the complexity isn't from non-applying heuristics, it's from sheer exponentiality of options even within known lines. Picrel.
every additional move requires another order of magnitude of compute to solve it, you hit a hard physical limit well before even an average/short game is solved (Not counting shit like the scholars mate)
While quantum would likely solve a few more piece-endings (likely up to 10), and a few more opening move optimizations, we would then be at the point of diminishing returns. Eventually we'd need several computer revolutions just to add one more solved ply. Physics simply doesn't have the room for it.

TLDR: The numbers are just too big, even amongst common lines.

VIABLE strategies are far fewer and therefore far fewer "moves", muh infinity moves is intentionally obscuring that. winning strategies have been mapped and optimized. with engines the game has become memorizing slight variations and relying on your opponent's blunder. he's right, eventually it will be reduced to a handful and become the equivalent of rock paper scissors where the only deciding factor is who goes first.

yeah but this is what happens when people who suck at something try to use their intuition to understand it… like elon…

in chess there are only specific positions, like recapturing a piece, where there is only one good response.

in most positions there are 8 or so good moves and you have to choose just 1. that’s what makes or breaks you in any competition even a brain dead sport.

and that occurs on the very first move for both players. loads of good options.

>>
>>542063959
Proven means there's a known chain that would also beat that new sequence (played optimally). If the opponent deviates from that optimal line to a weaker line, there's a new complete sequence to beat it.

Proven means we know the actual sequence. Practically solved just means the evaluation model goes from +0.5 to +2.0 and applies logic to say it's a won game, absent a mistake.
>>
>>542075807
They're not perfect moves, they're extremely strong moves. If it was a perfect known move, no evaluation would be needed, both sides would just instantly make the best known move (imagine knowing all the permutations of tic tac toe, you wouldn't have to evaluate the position to make the best move)

Starcraft cheats the complexity question by having an infinite pool of maps, though. The board changes every time it looks like the game is getting figured out. If you forced people at gunpoint to play the exact same map pool for 20 years Zerg winrates would probably be close to 100%.

Pretty much every multiplayer video game has more possible games than chess.
>>
>>542063774
Golf also does not have a real opponent.
>>
>>542079593
Most of the video games can be easily solved, not with chess.
>>
>>542079296
Starcraft is dogshit for the sole fact that APM shouldn't be a deciding factor to win in a strategy game.
>>
A.I. is getting good a video games now with not needing text it watches the screen and learns how to get good.

Even if chess isn't completely solved it could study enough games to never lose to a human
>>
>>542060788
chess isn't solved, in the sense that the best possible move has been found from start to finish, but computers are much, much better at it than humans because chess is so limited. Last time I checked (back when AI couldn't properly render fingers), human Go players could still beat computers, but that will probably stop pretty soon if it hasn't already.

kek i wish i had balls to troll
right now im in the middle of implementing my paper and running at 100% winrate at 1700ish elo, i've only been testing here for speed becuase higher elos run for longer and it's quick and wasy to test

there's still a bunch to implement and im sure i can break over 2k elo easy with several things i've yet to add from the paper
there are also several things i think i can add not in the paper to break above 3k elo and i have some ideas to break over 3500,
also im using python atm so i can nail down logic before porting to C for speed.
im calling it "mask" because it's about bit manipulations

also fwiw, my stuff doesn't encode anything about moves, like openings, or meta-chess moves stuff like that, it's a completely generic solver using bit manipulation

>inb4 you're calling a different python file not main.py
main.py is my engine and the mask_vs_stockfish.py is a runner that calls both stockfish and my main file

ketamine is a helluva drug
you cant not tweet

These are the weekly/monthly “how many times will @elonmusk post?” contracts. They started in June 2024.

One busy week in late February 2026 did $46.5 million in volume on a single weekly contract — Polymarket’s own write-up. That is a 342× jump from the first week’s $136k.
Other fat weeks: about $21 million (Jan 23–30, 2026) and about $22 million (Dec 16–23, 2025).
Typical later-2026 weeks are more like $0.6–4 million each. Right now: Sep 3–5 window ~$623k volume; Sep 1–8 ~$0.8–1 million.
Dune counted 3,881 Elon tweet-count markets from May 2024 through April 2026. There is no single published all-time total, but stacking weekly $1–5M markets for two years plus the $20M+ spikes puts cumulative volume in the hundreds of millions, not billions.
Open interest on a given week is usually a sliver of that volume — examples in the tens to low hundreds of thousands, not millions — because the same dollars get traded back and forth as the count updates.

Concentration is extreme: the top 1% of wallets did about 83% of Elon-tweet volume in that Dune study.

What Elon meant was, you can pare down the possibilities drastically by cordoning off the "retard moves". It drastically lowers the number of moves you actually need to calculate.

Nta but a locally suboptimal move would be the exact strategy that defeats this line of thinking. Move away from the local maximum towards a local(or even global sometimes) minimum can actually get you closer towards a global maximum. It could very well be the case that a series of locally optimal moves just guarantee's a loss (dead end optimal strategy) while a series of intentional suboptimal moves outcompetes in the long run.

Nobody wants to believe the fact that rich people are usually midwits who were at the right place at the right time and their success has little to do with their intelligence.
>>
>>542082514
It's more of a combination of cleverness and persistence. I don't believe it's possible to stay rich if you're a completely shit person. Do a thought experiment, what do you think would happen if you gave a homeless guy 10 million dollars? He would lose it fast obviously. So there is some virtue in being rich, and there is some sort of winning attitude that contributes to it. It's learnable and clever people, not necessarily smart but persistent, are able to learn it.
