I recommend inheriting a home rather than working for one if you're the sort of personality that likes home ownership. It's still a lot of work keeping-up appearances, but I find it worthwhile. I like hosting garage sales and messing around in the yard. It's nothing too fancy, but it has both a wood stove and a fireplace... some nice trees, a detached garage, a good-sized deck from which you can see across the big lake, five bedrooms, a dedicated laundry room, and more. If anything it's maybe a bit much for a single middle-aged guy and his little dog. I imagine a lot of Gen Xers are poised to inherit.
