There was an event around 4000-3500 years ago when a bunch of steppe nomads calling themselves "arya" invaded India and imposed their language and culture on the natives. These nomads then integrated their societies with the natives' and within a few centuries it was forgotten that there had ever been an Aryan migration into India (although some early rigvedic hymns allude to it), and the Indian society that developed considered itself native to the land. About 3800 years later, in the nineteenth century, Europeans exposed to Sanskrit texts for the first time realized that there must have been a common ancestor between these "arya" nomads and the cultures of europe, leading to the now widely accepted (I daresay proven) Indo-European framework.However this was extremely damaging to the religious power players in India, who had been claiming autochthonic status for literal millennia at this point and who had made the "unbroken tradition from prehistory" of hinduism in india a major selling point of their authority. So they just couldn't accept the new findings. Instead, they started pushing the biggest wewuzzery campaign in all of history, leading generations of Indians to believe that the Indo-European steppe nomads ORIGINATED in india and spread outwards. To this day, indian historiographers and archaeologists refuse to accept the most basic linguistic and artifactual tenets of the fields they're in and try hopelessly to "prove" that it was indians who spread outwards across europe, not the other way around.
