They would consequently be forced to simply buy less other goods. This would cause demand for other goods to fall. When the demand falls then sellers will be forced to lower their prices to the point where they meet the new demand. This would reduce not only demand for those specific goods, but for the factors of production which they use to produce their good. This would mean that the price of gas rising would have a ripple effect throughout the economy, reducing prices for most goods. The idea that all businesses would be able to pass the increased price of gas on to the consumer would require credit expansion, it simply cannot work without it.
