I started off as a technician working on mining equipment, really grueling work. I lost respect for trafies the moment I stepped foot in the shop. All they do is seeth all day. There was an incident were this engineer didnt know something simple and they wouldn't shut up about it for over a year on end, every fucking day talking shit on the engineer to justify their shitty existence. Mind u this dude designed the stuff we are working on, he had one moment of forgetfulness and the trades latched on to that incident like their life depended upon it.
That's actually better pay than most trades I see hiring. The only ones who do OK in the trades are guys in obscure lucrative trades. Either way, they invariably work 60 hour weeks, and that doesn't end, ever. That's how a lot of trades guys try to flex about their income, without mentioning they're completely and utterly dependent on the perpetual overtime hours.The trades is a meme, you're better off being a NEET and waiting for socialism to happen

>>542132732There's no school required, I started out fixing computers in the shop and their toolmaker was retiring, the owner offered to train me up. That was about 5 years ago and since then I made a deal equity in exchange for less hourly compensation and that has really paid dividends - we started doing some medical work this year and its big $$ and I see direct upside there. The bad news is if we're slow, I've only got 30 hours guaranteed. But honestly we do such good work that we're basically always backed up, it's finally gotten to the point we feel comfortable bringing another person on board. But you'll find it's not uncommon to have some kind of profit share in job shops, even if they aren't employee owned. That being said it's really dependent on finding the right shop - my partner is a great guy, god fearing and all that and I trust him completely, but there's plenty of sweatshops run by scumbags out there too. Ask what kind of work they do and ask yourself is this profitable work - you can usually judge that by the industry the customers are in. If they're making consumer products it may or may not be fairly profitable depending on the markup. But if they're making something that is itself involved in manufacturing well the skies the limit because the cost of those parts get amortized over every component they manufacture. Which is why I recommend tool and die, they tend to be doing the pricier and therefor more profitable work. I certainly see more future in it than commercial driving, I'm sure you know trucking has been on a steady slide downhill since deregulation. Our customers are all manufacturing things in America and this has been our busiest year in 25+
