Turning Meryl from an insurance adjustor to a news reporter handicaps her entire character. Classic Meryl had a personal interest in the actions and consequences of Vash existing, and making her a reporter just sort of sidelines her character and investment. Meryl existed as the everyman character, a normal person who follows along and gives the viewer a place in the story as their eyes. The disasters that follow Vash everywhere he goes are felt by Meryl and transmited to the viewer. Nu-Meryl is just a passive observer who has no vested interest in the events other than a detached observation which, in turn, leads the viewer to experience the story in the same kind of detached manner.It's such a small thing, but it genuinely affects the story from the first episode and compounds the longer the remake goes on.
