The buildings are very nice and if you look at pictures or videos of any Russian city you'll see them. The Metro was a public transportation service explicitly designed to make the common worker feel elevated and respected. Their transport should not be some crusty, muddy wagon but instead a grand underground train and fancy buildings. This is all really obvious stuff if you even had wikipedia-tier understanding of the world and history.

The first underground metros were built decades before that in Europe.They're also not that deep in Moscow. In St Petersburg they are quite deep but that has mostly to do with the geology (the city is basically a bunch of islands). The old technique for building these was called cut-and-cover and it is still the better way to do it but is very disruptive to the surface and businesses don't like it. If you dig a big hole and then put a roof on it and build the street back on top of it you can go as deep as your army of men with shovels and horses with wagons will go.

Russia's real problem was that this industrialization occurred in "islands", meaning there were a few Russian cities with major industrial hubs, while the periphery remained essentially agrarian and disconnected from that industrialization. the fact that the industrialization process was uneven does not alter the fact that, by the early 20th century, Russia was one of the world's major industrial powers in terms of production.
