They might not be perfect at first and people will go “it doesn’t shoot 100.0% of them down? What a waste of money get some boys with shotguns out there” when with enough practice against real targets and tactics they could get it down pretty well. A combat laser actually melts a fiber optic cable like butter (it’s just plastic) so may be quite good at dealing with those since you don’t need an exact bead on it, just sweep the general area underneath it to snag the cable probably quite far out with a high success rate. You can easily spot fiber drones vs wireless since they carry a big spool canister. As for the non wireless where you would have a couple seconds to pivot and hit it as it’s coming in, that sounds like it should be the same thing and it ought to generally work, but because you have no time to make corrections and there is ‘dwell time’ for the beam to actually damage something, if for example you put out its camera eye but not the motors it will probably still keep coming and close that last couple meters blind and hit you anyway. I also wonder if they would start making metal arm/propeller drones that (at the expense of cost and range) would now take too much laser dwell time to easily damage in time before the strike. Like they save laser proofed drones only to take out these systems when spotted, etc. that is how the world works, nobody is going to just go “aww shucks they have something new it’s over we lost let’s go home” and will instead start working on countering it.
