Just a note: Besides being a fucking contradictory joke ("gas prices will go down if you just use less, durr"), there's also a formal reason why that CAN'T happen called "inelastic demand".

That's why cutting off 20% of the world's oil causes more than 20% of a price increase.
Its not just "filling the gap". The gap can't be filled. Its that the price has to go up until 20% of the market is priced out, and that's where Trump's Iran blunder is going to become a bigger deal than COVID.

WFH is antisemitic. Do you have any idea how much Holocaust survivors have invested in office real estate? No goy, you will have to commute forever. Can't have you spending too much time with your family

No because then you'll miss out on all the "culture" and "collaboration."

You know, the culture of everyone politely chuckling at the boss' boring ass anecdote that he's taking up half the meeting with. The culture of office bitches getting catty over who forgot to bring the napkins to the last potluck. The mandatory fun shit that one miserable childless hag forces on everyone else. The corporate volunteer opportunities where you can go wear company t-shirts and do a 1 hour make-work volunteering thing so the company can snap some photos and get positive PR. The culture of some bitch always whining about cleaning out the fridge, or labeling stuff in the fridge, or about dirty coffee mugs not put in the dishwasher...

The upside of having a dementia president in Biden was that the man had the basic fucking humility to smile and nod and say "okay" when an expert told him something.
So the effect of demented Biden was that we had the country running on auto-pilot, which wasn't great, but the country obviously didn't just fall apart either...

Trump continues to think he knows better than everyone no matter how far he declines, and that's infinitely worse...

That’s probably not really going to do anything. Oil is perhaps the least influenced product by supply and demand. When there were no cars on the road during the pandemic, diesel was at its highest. Before the start of the syrian war, gas was at its lowest. Even at the end of the war in kuwait, after they burned maybe more than 700 oil wells, gas prices still fell. Supply and demand almost has no influence on gas prices

>>542216227
But demand isn't inelastic. Americans are just entitled, self-centered assholes. Most driving is discretionary, upwards of 75% of it is for leisure or for tasks that can be modified to greater efficiency, often much greater efficiency. And since anyone and everyone who gets a camera shoved into their face and asked about gas prices freely admit that they a) expect them to go higher and b) have no intention to do anything about it except complain, refiners pay attention to that when they set prices.

Your central premise is not incorrect though. Demand influences prices, but it's not a direct relationship. It is corrupted by market speculation, politics and leftist policies (taxation, regulation) to promote "walkable cities," which is a cynical euphemism for pushing leftist shithole high crime mass transit on civilized people and other pathways to suck the middle class dry

>Most driving is discretionary, upwards of 75% of it is for leisure or for tasks that can be modified to greater efficiency
Yeah, if you're talking about individuals driving, which ignores the bulk of inelastic demand that relates to things being SHIPPED, and that process is already highly optimized.

Oh, and would you look at that: The fuel price that's actually spiking right now is DIESEL!
OOF.
>>
>>542217009
Yes all the 18-wheelers you see are just enjoying a sunny afternoon joyride
>>
>>542217009
Apparently driving is selfish for some reason.
>>
Kalshi is evil as fuck.
>>
>>542217350
I remember they don't like it in Russia because it gives individuals a way to move without being tracked, unlike trains, so maybe that's the latest "innovation" Trump is learning from the east...
>>
>>542217350
So it is, in a way, selfish to drive.
If you have public transportation, or you are against public transit for racist reasons, it can be selfish to drive. It should be basic common sense to vote for the funding of the needed infrastructure to supply the needed transit to build the needed public transportation.
>>
>>542215774
>drive less for lower gas prices
yeah, sounds logical
they should also stop eating, so prices for food go down
lowest price = when nobody eats anything anymore
>>
>>542215774
As if driving less will have any effect.

Oil Company Executive meeting:
>hey everyone, as we all know, consumers followed the Energy Secretary's advice, and they have miraculously cut driving by 50%, which means we're producing a gigantic surplus. Ideas?
>Yeah, let's sell what we can of that surplus at the market high, but when prices start to decline just dramatically cut production to keep prices artificially high.
but what if the other oil producers keep producing and flood our market?
>Who cares? They'll hurt on lowering profits, we've scaled back production costs and we'll be here to swoop back in when they get tired of that game.
>okay sounds good, remember our goal is to fuck the consumer as hard as we can and maintain the highest profit margin imaginable

Kek. I work in operations but for the people who worked downtown, in 2020 they were all sent home to work and they gave up the lease (never explaining what they did with the money). They were so arrogantly certain that their "carefully considered decision" in mid March 2020 (literally just two weeks after the whole thing broke open) to send everyone home permanently was cutting edge workforce management.

Four years later they change their minds after many people moved 50-100 miles out of town or gave up a coveted daycare spot for their kid. The first meetings about "return to work" were an absolute shit-storm, funnier than hell. They re-purchased the same office space but didn't replace the cubicles and shit because they got rid of all that too. Many are working now in cuck booths like picrel or that open-space "collaborative" shit.

>>542217301
That's a separate conversation. For openers, the topic is about a government official telling individuals to drive less so you've gone off topic.

For commercial consumption, higher fuel prices obviously result in higher prices, lower sales, less demand, therefore less consumption and ultimately lower fuel prices. That is a much more direct relationship, and the "inelastic demand" argument fails completely.

>>542217350
Not an argument. If you just want to vent your infantile direction-brain rage regardless of the actual discussion topic, go to /b/.

Complete and utter horseshit. Even when looking a regular every day people, commutes and essential driving like to the grocery store dwarf "leisure". And that was already the case even before everything went to shit and people just started sitting at home watching netflix because there is nothing else to do.

Neoliberals will tell you it's your own fault that suburban sprawl is built on cheap farmland, necessitating driving dozens of miles on interstates just to get groceries or see the dentist. They will tell you dense zoning is communism in the same breath.
