The 2 main sides I've seen are that 6 million died according to the talmudic rabbis prediction from centuries earlier(holocaust means burnt offering, the offering to return to jerusalem), and the other side basically argues that germany was trying to prevent the jews from causing trouble and wanted to push them out(ethnic cleansing) of germany and back into east europe. The people died from starvation and disease due to allies bombing german farms, factories and cutting supply lines. The estimates are ~250k deaths in the camps. The problem is that every country has had concentration camps and every country has practiced ethnic cleansing at least once, so germany isn't special in this regard. What the nazis did wasn't right, but its not the same scale as genociding 6 million people. For context, both communist russia and the US had concentration camps at this time.

The western allies also held the wives of the defendants captive and forced them to testify. Maybe they threatened to hurt them, who knows.
