To have a "guilty mind" (mens rea) in a murder case, a person must be capable of understanding reality and knowing that their actions are wrong. Legal insanity completely breaks that capability.

Courts usually measure this using two main standards. If either applies, the law decides the person could not form a guilty mind:

1. They did not understand what they were doing

The mental illness completely distorts the person's perception of reality. They physically commit the act, but their mind is living in a completely different scenario.
