One thing that struck me while driving through former DDR is how empty and barren it is. You'll barely hear about businesses being founded there either. It's like this because while the rest of the eastern bloc had to deal with their problems and start from scratch in 1990, Germany simply reunified and millions of people were simply able to leave in droves to their rich neighborin an instant.
