I live in public housing and I didn't even know what public housing was until many years after moving here. At most you will hear it's municipal, but the fact it's subsidized by taxes is hidden deep down in fine print. I don't follow the media here though. There is a term "allmännyttan" but it's quite obscure. They don't exactly advertise that it's public housing. The expression "miljonprogrammet" is heard sometimes, referring to apartments that were built in the 60s and 70s.
