I did a mercy kill on a tiny kitten that was like 5-6 days old, and was abandoned by his bitch cat mom. He must have been pretty sick too. We found it alone in the middle of the garden in the hostel we were staying (in Bulgaria, tons of stray cats there), we tried to feed him but nothing worked, tried to call someone to pick him up but no one answered, even the guys at the hostel just told us to leave him die, that it was something that happened quite frequently (apparently young cat moms tend to abandon their kittens if they get freaked out or just think there's not enough food for all the babies)Also he was very small, and wouldnt accept normal food, not even milk. It was a desperate situation, he was meowing and crying non stop. I covered him with a blanket, and snapped his neck as fast as I could. It felt like breaking a toothpick in two, even made the same sound. It was absolutely horrible, but I know I did the right thing, that poor thing would have just die of starvation or eaten by rats/crows.
