According to RMS cloud computing is simply a trap aimed at forcing more people to buy into locked, proprietary systems that would cost them more and more over time."It's stupidity. It's worse than stupidity: it's a marketing hype campaign".
>>542369002Always been like that since the beginning.
I disagree with this conclusion of it being stupidity. It is simply intelligent methodical greed
>>542369002He's mostly right. But elastic rental infrastructure is useful for hosting public stuff and dealing with surges. No retailer wants to size infrastructure based on Christmas shopping rush. Or a game having extra capacity for the first couple weeks.
>>542369002A-FUCKING-MEN
Ok, go ahead and by the bare metal that will be obsolete in a month.
>>542369002he's not wrong
>>542371333checked and that's one use case. the main reason it got so popular though is it's a shortcut around the procurement process in our dysfunctional large enterprises like government
>>542371333This is how they fool you into the cloud."You shitty app/website could suddenly become famous, popular, viral! and your puny server would be unable to cope with that, so buy our bitcoins I mean our cloud and you'll get rich soon!"
>>542371420>obsolete in a monthWhy? Because you replaced your entire engineering workforce with jeets that can only write things in O(n!) time to "save" money?
Uncle Bad Touch isn't listened to much anymore. Vote data center, friends
>>542369002Own nothing be happy subscription based model. He’s right. They want this for cars homes you have to rent everything.
>>542369002Yeah... He can say that as an academic stuck in the 80's whose idea of "enterprise infrastructure" is an ibm tower in a closet hosting a 5mg spreadsheet used by accounting. He did some cool things, but he needs to understand he's a computer scientist and academic, he does not have the experience or knowledge to weigh in on cloud computing. I guarantee he probably thinks cloud is a virtual server hosted by AWS
>>542369002He’s right.
>>542371824>he's a computer scientist and academic, he does not have the experience or knowledge to weigh in on cloud computing.>I guarantee he probably thinks cloud is a virtual server hosted by AWSI guarantee you he doesn't think that, but being an academic he doesn't understand my other post, nor do most people in this thread. >>542371502
>>542369002advanced ai models can only work via cloud computingthe hardware to run them costs hundreds of thousands of dollarsthis legalistic bitter jew can seethe more
>>542372431shut up and kill yourself faggot
>>542372217You're viewing the cloud as a substitute or stand in for on prem. Procurement dysfunction is not the core problem. The biggest advantage of cloud infrastructure is availability and reliability and the ability to treat infrastructure like cows, not pets. The way you get that is by having someone who understands the cloud. The reason the cloud doesn't take off for for some people is because they treat it like a hypervisor. The cloud doesn't just allow quicker deployments. It quite literally the backbone to the modern global economy. It moves too fast for old ways.
>>542369002He destroyed calluses on his foot by eating them
>>542369002>RMSyou mean... Randy Marsh... (from) Southpark?
>>542369002>RMSBased ass grabber... no floating hands for him
>>542369002Yeah, most IT guys know that, but remember we don't always make the decisions - some retarded faggot manager sees a buzzword, or hears about the "New Thing" and suddenly we're ordered to do stupid shit.
I don't believe RMS is on Twitter personally because of proprietary java script code.
>>542372712you speak the textbook cloud sakes brochure. these enterprises I'm talking about don't understand cloud, they don't understand how to hire someone who understands cloud and they don't know how to employ developers who understand cloud. I'm speaking from direct personal experience here working large migrations from on prem to cloud in giant enterprise. So it becomes a way for them to "get VMs faster" that they run 24x7 in cloud which is the worst most expensive way to run in cloud. There's issues with decomposing apps into "server less" cloud components too, and that's where Stallmans point lands, you will vendor lock your shit most likely by doing that. Cloud also isn't all that reliable. Yes itsikely more reliable than most shitty UT shops, but that isn't a high bar. It's also hard to determine true uptime, go ahead and try and understand Azures SLA. They call major outages "degradations" instead. Nobody cares though because it's someone else's fault and everyone else is down too. Don't tell me what I know about cloud dude I been working on it since the beginning. It's a tool, appropriate in some cases not in others. None of this changes my point either that the real problem it solved goraege enterprise was procurement speed.
>>542373182>some retarded faggot manager sees a buzzword, or hears about the "New Thing" and suddenly we're ordered to do stupid shit.lol this is the essence of IT/software work
>>542369002I LOATHE anything on the "cloud" (someone elses controlled access server). If I need an internet connection to use a program that should reasonably be available offline, then I'm just simply not going to use it. It's just a giant scam, and they even have deadman switches built in to completely lock a program if you don't pay them for a fresh renewal every month/year. Free software doesn't try to rape me like that. Free software just needs time to learn how it works, which you would have to do on proprietary stuff anyways, only with less skill and mastery.
>>542369002yeah that's cool and all but isnt he like supposed to come up with a solution ?like he's THE brain guy and he is just fingerpointing like all the plebs ? whats his vaxx status ?
>>542369002Stallman is always right (at least when he talks about computer stuff)
